Notice if the images or sounds bring other things to mind by resemblance. This could be done in a number of different ways.
Symbolism: an image or sound of something else from our world could be used to bring external ideas into the work. This image contains a symbol that resembles a person in a wheelchair.
This contains a symbol we know to be associated with the male gender, even though it is not a picture of a male.
Signification: some ideas can be expressed without literal images or sounds, e.g., red can mean “stop” or make us think of blood; a downward curve might suggest sadness (a frown)
Mimesis: even more basic ideas like conflict, falling, etc. could be expressed with more basic shapes.
This image might make you think of sparks flying, a sword fight, or bleeding cuts.
This composition uses brief clips of recognizable sounds to create a kind of poetry by the way sounds make us think of other things.
